Sutherland Institute Announces Utah Prosperity Forum

The Sutherland Institute announced today the first session of the Utah Prosperity Forum (UPF), a collaborative project with the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, which will be held on Friday, November 14 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Sutherland Institute.

The first session, titled “Utah Economic Gardening,” will examine an entrepreneur-centered economic growth strategy that offers balance to the traditional economic practices of business recruitment.  The 90-minute presentation and discussion on Economic Gardening will be led by Mark Lange, Executive Director of the Edward Lowe Foundation.

“When it comes to economic development, recruiting companies to relocate typically takes center stage and grabs headlines, but research proves that what really drives new jobs is the expansion of existing, local companies,” says Lange.

Sutherland and the Salt Lake Chamber launched the Utah Prosperity Forum to give Utah business and community leaders a venue to brainstorm and discuss ideas for Utah’s economic growth.  The UPF plans to hold one event per quarter on various topics concerning business in Utah.

“The UPF aims to foster constructive, civil dialogue about complex and sometimes controversial issues pertaining to Utah’s economy,” said Paul T. Mero, President of the Sutherland Institute.  “Economic Gardening is an innovative concept that urges government to invest in local entrepreneurs, rather than trying to convince established corporations to relocate to Utah.  The concept began and had great success in Littleton, Colorado, and we will discuss how increasing support for local entrepreneurs can create sustainable economic growth here in Utah.”

Seating will be limited, and attendees should register by calling 801-355-1272 or visiting https://www.sutherlandinstitute.org/event.asp.  A $10 participation fee includes a buffet lunch, and the initial session will be conducted at the Sutherland Institute, located in the Crane Building at 307 West 200 South, Suite 5005.
